WHITEHAVEN RL won their final home game of the season.

The West Cumbrian side took on Halifax Panthers at the Ortus Rec on Sunday, September 29.

Despite the result, Haven will still be facing relegation from the Championship to League 1.

Head coach Kyle Amor said: "It's a fantastic way to end the campaign, first of all, I'd like to start by wishing our captain James Newton all the best.

"He came off and it looked relatively okay which is always a good sign. But obviously, once he got inside, the ambulance came, put him on a stretcher, and took him up to the hospital.

"We wish him and his family all the best over the next 24 hours while we find out what's happened to him."

Following the post-match interview it was discovered that James Newton had suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck

Mr Amor continued: "The game went brilliantly and we played some brilliant stuff. I said to the lads today, go and play carefree and enjoy it, play like you're a little kid again almost because there was no pressure here today, none whatsoever.

"And there was no pressure on the players either which made it a great game of rugby league.

"I thought we got off to a terrible start, and physically we just got beat to the punch, they raced away into a 16-0 lead before we had any kind of response but the response came from our interchange.

"I feel that our middle had to wear an awful lot of direct carries early on and we weren't quite where we needed to be in terms of getting our body in front.

"They were finding space between us and rolling us down the field, I thought when Mackenzie Buckley came on he really helped to change the game.

"What a debut also from Jack Kell, I cannot tell you how happy I am with that.

"It was a risk bringing up and putting him in as he had no pre-season but boy there's some little player in there."
