WHITEHAVEN came away with a much-needed win when they took on Swinton Lions away this week.

The West Cumbrian side took on the Manchester outfit at Heywood Road on Sunday, July 22.

Whitehaven secured an impressive 20-22 win over Swinton.

Head coach Jonty Gorley spoke to Jordan Weir about the result, he said: "It's the same story, we were really poor in the first half and really good in the second half.

"This week it's been the opposite way round, we've normally been good in the first half and poor the second half and haven't seen games out.

"But at 14-0, we had to score next and got a try out of nothing in our first good ball set.

"Locky bounced out of a few good ball tackles and got under the sticks so fair play for that, but I thought 14-0 would have been a fair score at halftime.

"Even that was being generous, it could have easily been more, but the lads took it eight points down and we hadn't played great. So, the story at halftime was to get into the game, grind on, the kick chase needs to be good and keep him in a corner.

"We did that for the first 25 minutes of the second half, that's probably the best our rugby has been, it was just basic, and we played a bit fast around the middle which was good for us.

"I thought that Lenny Ellis did a really good job as dummy half around the middle. Bearing in mind we used four substitutes by 23 minutes, every yardage set was back, and we were putting a middle on last to get a kick away.

"Our back five were really good and that set the platform, we ended up having a sub left. So after doing four in 23 minutes, we still had a sub left at the end and that was on the back of the good work by the back five."
