Only two yachts were prepared to compete for the Whitehaven Sailing & Boating Association President’s Trophy on Saturday given the forecast of rain and poor visibility.

7th Heaven (A&K French) and Wild Theme (H Price) began in rain and 18 knots of SE wind heading up the Solway to round the green outfall marker buoy just north of Workington harbour mouth and return to the finish line off Whitehaven’s west pier.

Wild Theme kept pace well with the larger 7th Heaven on the outward leg but on the return the wind died to four knots and as the day brightened Wild Theme began to lose ground.

Although the wind picked up again in the later stages Wild Theme still finished 45 minutes behind 7th Heaven but over the 16-mile course this was enough for Wild Theme to take the win on handicap by 15 minutes.

The next event is a Bank Holiday Regatta held this weekend, Saturday August 28 to Monday August 30.
