Leeds Rhinos will be taking no chances when they line-up against Workington Town tomorrow night says chief executive Gary Hetherington.
The two sides will clash in the fifth round of the Coral Challenge Cup at Headingley and Hetherington says they will not be underestimating their League One visitors.
Leeds will put out a strong side for the highly anticipated clash as they look to build confidence after a poor start to their Super League season, which sees them rock bottom of the table at present.
“The Challenge Cup is a different tournament, a different competition for us and we are hoping to come up with a good performance and obviously the right result for us,” said Hetherington.
“We know looking through the Workington line up that we won’t be underestimating them. Leeds will be turning out a very strong side on Friday.
“As we all know in the Challenge Cup anything can happen and we will be taking no chances.”
Hetherington has many memories of trips to Derwent Park both as a fan of Castleford in his early years, then as a player and later an official.
He admits that this competition is a special one, for both clubs and he is looking forward to the Town fans and players enjoying their experience of the new-look Headingley tomorrow.
“The Challenge Cup is a great rugby league tradition and both Workington and Leeds have got great history in the cup so we are all looking forward to Friday night,” he added.
“And this game will be especially interesting with brothers Brad and Perry Singleton playing against each other for possibly the first time. And after the final whistle they will be interviewed in the South Stand in front of all the fans.
“Our fans will be welcoming the Town fans on Friday night and Workington fans will all be offered a free pint of Tetley’s bitter or lager as a welcoming drink.
“It will be a great experience for the fans and for the players.”
Leeds sent some of their leading players up to Derwent Park yesterday to help Workington Town run a coaching camp for local youngsters, which was a resounding success.
Hetherington said he was delighted to be able to help promote the game in this way.
He added: “The Leeds club are always keen to help rugby league development and in west Cumbria there is such a passion for the game.
“So to bring some of our leading players, along with staff from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation to assist with the coaching camp, it is all part of very good relationship that we have with Workington Town.”
