‘This is a chance for my players to shine against some of the best in the country,’ declared Workington Town coach Leon Pryce, ahead of their Coral Challenge Cup clash with Leeds Rhinos on Friday night.
Pryce says his Town squad should not be daunted by the Rhinos star-studded line up as this is simply a fantastic opportunity to put themselves in the shop window and show what they can do on a big stage.
Town will play the Rhinos at Headingley on Friday with a place in the sixth round draw of the cup at stake, kicking off at 7.45pm.
And a large contingent of travelling fans are expected to make the journey down from west Cumbria.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the players and I am really pleased that they will get the chance to perform against some of Super League’s best players,” said Pryce.
“It is going to be a great occasion for them and for all the fans.
“They just have to go there and take it as a chance to see where they are and how good they really are.
“If they go out there and have a massive game against Leeds they will put themselves in the shop window. They will show they can handle themselves against some of the best players in Super League.”
Pryce, a former Bradford and St Helens star himself, has plenty of experience at running out at Headingley and says it holds a special place in his memory.
And he says the experience will stay with his players and the fans long after the final whistle has sounded on Friday.
“Headingley is one of my favourite grounds, it is very hostile and the crowd are always very vocal,” he admitted.
“The old Headingley stadium was pretty special, there was always a great atmosphere there. Obviously I have not played in the new one but I am sure it will be very similar.
“I just want the lads to go out there and enjoy the occasion and put on an improved performance from last weekend.
“It is something that people will be talking about for years to come hopefully.”
