St Benedicts RU juniors had an away day in style on Saturday to play in the competitive Sale tournament for both the under-11s and under-12s.
The under-12s started against a strong Longton Lions outfit and the lack of warm up showed as Longton ran in two tries in quick succession but once the St Benedict’s kids got into the swing, they came up with a great individual try but just ran out of time to get the equaliser.
Next up for the 12s was Glossop and the Bennies youngsters were determined to put things right after the first defeat.
They dominated the game from start to finish with swift passing and a mixture of pace from the backs and power from the forwards they ran in a comfortable three tries to zero win.
Next in line was a very strong Chester team who had size as a advantage but Bennies had the momentum and earned another impressive three tries to zero scoreline.
Sandbach were the next oponenets and it was a pretty even game with both teams impressive in the rucks and in defence but a solitary try earned another 1-0 win.
The last game was against Longton Limas, this time playing under soggy skies, saw one try apiece with the draw probably a fair result.
Then it was the turn of the under-11s and it was clear to see they were the smallest outfit in the whole tournament but the kids relished the challenge.
First up was Chester who had power on their side but with a solid defence, Bennies won the game four tries to zero. They followed this up with a dominating display over Burley winning 3-0.
Longton was the next challenge for Bennies and it was very even throughout until Benedic’ts got the breakthrough with a individual bit of brilliance from Jackson Smith. But almost immediately Longton levelled the score and it finished 1-1.
The last fixture was against another Rochdale side who had been watching, hoping to be the first team to defeat the young Cumbrian side. But their hopes were dashed as Bennies went on to win 2-0 to remain unbeaten.
All the kids then went onto the Sale Sharks v Perpignan game.
On Sunday, St Benedict’s under-7s had a home fixture against Wigton and some slick play from both sides saw plenty of tries.
St Benedict’s now have 123 kids on their books from under-7s up to under-14s.
