A dream fulfilled for Workington Comets team manager Tony Jackson left him stunned and emotional after his side lifted the first league title in the club's history.
Comets battled back from 10 points down in the SGB Championship play-off decider against Lakeside at Derwent Park last night and were fully worth of their glorious victory as they went on to win 61-29 on the night and 95-73 on aggregate.
Jackson, who first watched Comets as a boy and has seen plenty of talented Workington teams fall short of clinching the top prize since then, admitted the win still hadn't sunk in the morning after.
"Every year you dream about doing this," he said.
"We just got stronger and stronger as the year went on and when we lost Dan Bewley to injury we thought that was it; our best chance ever, gone.
"The riders have all just been willing each other to win.
"With everything that's gone on behind the scenes and all of the problems we've had, to win the league and cup double is unbelievable.
"The supporters have gone through a lot down the years but last night was like the old days with a big crowd and a great atmosphere.
"Lakeside were totally demoralised by the midway point and it wasn't the most dramatic finish we've had to a meeting but we've had enough of those to last a lifetime.
"Things have gone our way for once but we've had so many years where nothing has gone our way so we deserved this, 100 per cent.
"What's been very nice has been the amount of complimentary messages we've received from fans of other clubs and former riders.
"We've already got the Ian Thomas Shield and the Border Trophy so I said to Laura [Morgan, the club's owner] she'll be hoping someone buys her a trophy cabinet for Christmas."
Jackson also heaped praise on guest Tero Aarnio, a former Comet who put in a huge performance to help his old side clinch the title, and said he was not surprised the Finn delivered as he did.
"I knew Tero would play his part because he's a good friend of ours and he jumped at the chance to be involved so we were delighted he was there to share in the success," Jackson said.
"He did his bit last night and Claus Vissing did on Thursday night so it was nice to have two former Comets be a part of it because they have an affinity with the club and supporters."
Comets added the league title to the Knockout Cup they won on Thursday and will look to complete the treble tonight in the Championship Shield final second leg at Derwent Park (7pm start).
