A FUNERAL directors in Whitehaven is hoping to offer a more personal cremation service for the deceased and their families.

Yeowart, Gill & Rudd Funeral Directors, which is located in Whitehaven town centre, is hoping to offer a more 'detailed' cremation service than they had previously, one more akin to a funeral.

This will be offered to those who have chosen a direct cremation service, as opposed to a full service and traditional funeral.

There have been stories in the national press of large-scale funeral directors simply offering cremation with no service.

John and Margaret at Yeowart's Funeral Home said they want to provide something more detailed and are welcoming families to have services before the cremation at their on-site chapel.

Those who attend the service will also be able to see the memorial book and will be given memorial cards.

Mr Yeowart said: "We're going to offer a unique and dignified direct cremation service.

"There will be a celebration of life in the chapel of rest, seating approximately 30 people, with a service provided by a celebrant.

"Then, the next morning go to the crematorium in a plain coffin, a ceremonial hearse, and bearers, with the session being non-attended and the ashes returned to the family later.

"We will also be offering the memorial book and memorial cards. We hope to offer the deceased and their family a dignified service if they choose the direct cremation option."

John and Margaret have been operating their service in Whitehaven for several decades.

They also do work in the community to grow stronger ties to the people living in their area.

At Christmas time they offer an on-site remembrance tree where people can come to remember their loved ones over the holiday season.

In recent months, the pair also paid tribute to the iconic rugby league star Rob Burrow who sadly lost his life to motor neurone disease.
