NORTH Cumbrian patients have donated over £6,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

North Cumbria Hospitals NHS Charity received £6,100 from patients that will go towards the breast unit.

A charity golf day and race night were held with Inter Pirelli Football Club, which managed to raise £4,100.

One lady called Catherine is currently undergoing treatment at Cumberland Infirmary and wants to raise money to help patients who are going through a similar experience.

June Walker is also a patient at The Cumberland Infirmary, she said: "As I am super impressed with the way I have been treated at the unit, I felt I wanted to do something in return.

"I organised a sponsored walk and coffee morning with a raffle through the help of Debbi Wilkinson, who is the manager of the flats where we live.

"She managed to collect a huge amount of raffle prizes, and the date was set for the walk.

"My husband and I were on scooters and led the way. There were about 20 participants, some with carers too.

"We had people on scooters, with wheelchairs, some with crutches and walking sticks, and a few just walking.

"On arrival back from the sponsored walk, our coffee morning was waiting for us and the raffle tickets sold quickly.

"We counted the money later and found we had made a magnificent sum of £961. The Tenants Fund donated £39 to round it up to £1000.

"Finally, to all the staff at the breast unit, keep up the good work."

Judith Lightburn and her family have raised £1,000 for The Breast Unit at The Cumberland Infirmary by chopping bags of kindling and selling them.

Judith wanted to say thank you for the care she received and give something back. She called her fundraising effort 'Chopping for Charity.'

Judith came back into the hospital to hand the money over to Thomas Nedumpara consultant breast surgeon, Julia Forsyth, clinical nurse specialist and Ioannis Michalakis, consultant breast surgeon and clinical lead.
