Cumberland Council is has announced the opening of an invitation to tender for contractors to deliver the Whitehaven Public Realm Scheme, focusing on improvements to Green Market and Duke Street.

The project aims to revitalise key areas of Whitehaven, including the replacement, cleaning, and repair of paving at Green Market and the Duke Street end of King Street.

The council says the initiative will enhance the town’s public realm and also boost local footfall and preserve the cultural significance of the area for years to come.

A contractor will be appointed through the tender process, with construction set to begin in January and completion expected by spring 2025.

The £450,000 project is funded through contributions from Sellafield, the council, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
