Some of Cumbria’s best young chess players competed at a county tournament.
The Cumbria Junior Chess Tournament kicked off at Long Marton Community School in Appleby on Saturday, September 19, with players travelling from Barrow, Whitehaven, Kirkby Stephen and Carlisle.
The standard of chess was high, with both age groups competing very tight and decided by the last game.
Rachael Bunter from Barrow won the Under 18 group with Miller Bowes from Maryport the runner up.
Alistair Jones of Penrith won the Under 13 group, with Drake Newton from Barrow the runner up.
John Lydon, Cumbria Junior Chess organiser, presented the trophies, and was helped by Peter Hanks, Neill Cooper, and Neil Foxcroft on the day.

Long Marton School holds a tournament of their own every year and works to promote chess in other schools as well.
In recognition of their promotion of chess, Mr Lydon presented teacher John Davis with a prestigious award from the British Educational Chess Trust, the second time that this school has received the award.
