A KITE surfer had to be rescued after getting into trouble off the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula during Storm Ashley.
At around 2pm today (Sunday) members of the RNLI were called out to save a kite surfer who suffered an ‘unfortunate situation’ with his equipment - leaving him swimming in the sea before being rescued.
Three friends were out kite surfing on the sea between Roa Island and Foulney Island when a line broke.
Chris Ainsbury, who runs Earnse Bay Kitesurfing, Joe Lydon and Ben North decided to go out to 'storm chase' during Storm Ashley.
When one of Ben’s lines broke and his kite became uncontrollable, he had to let go and tried to swim back to shore but got tired.
At one point Chris headed back to drag Ben back with his kite.
Joe said his friend experienced a situation with his equipment.
“He felt like it got snagged in the sea then bust," said Joe.
“The RNLI turned up, brought him back to shore and checked him over then the coastguard turned up.”
Joe said this would not put him off returning to the sea.
“Lessons are learned, and mistakes happen,” he said. “We love chasing storms.
“You never know what’s in the sea.”
