The first stage of a major project to boost Whitehaven's cycling, walking, and wheeling routes has been completed.

Cumberland Council has announced the completion of improvements to Route 14 of the Whitehaven Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), funded by the Government's Active Travel Fund.

The upgrades, which saw the widening of the shared cycleway and footway, were carried out between Wasdale Close and Stanley View.

The next stage of the project focuses on Esk Avenue and extends towards Whitehaven Amateurs Football Club.

This phase is expected to be completed by September 27.

The enhancements will include upgraded traffic signs and road markings.

During these works, the cycleway and footway will be closed during working hours from 7am to 5pm on weekdays.

The council has expressed appreciation for the community's continued support and patience during the ongoing works.

A spokesperson said: "The council apologise for any disruption the works may cause and are confident the final result will be worth it!"

The project is being undertaken in phases by Cumberland Council's specialist Highways Engineers and will continue throughout the autumn months.
