Cumberland Council has updated residents and businesses on upcoming roadworks on a main road,

The work, on the A6086 Main Street in Cleator, will start on Monday, September 23, for approximately 10 weeks, subject to weather conditions.

The first phase of work, beginning on Monday, will be managed under traffic lights until October 28 (following the half-term holiday).

After that, a full road closure will take place 'to ensure the safety of both road users and staff, as the road will not be wide enough to remain open during the work', a Cumberland Council spokesperson said.

During this period, a footway will be provided for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists, while a clearly marked diversion route will be in place for vehicles.

The council confirmed that school buses will be permitted to pass through the road closures in the mornings and afternoons, and waste collections on affected routes will proceed as scheduled on the normal collection dates.

The council added that it is working with Stagecoach to 'minimise disruption to public transport services' during the closure and that updates will be provided nearer the time.

More details about the road closure will be provided closer to the date, or residents can attend a drop-in session organised by the council where they can learn more about the planned highway improvements and discuss any feedback directly with the team, he council said.

This session will happen at the Jubilee Room at the Community Hall on Church Street in Cleator, CA23 3DD, on September 26 from 4pm to 6.30pm.

This project is part of a £14.3million investment from the central government's Levelling Up Fund, aimed at enhancing road infrastructure and reducing future disruptions.

The council aimed to significantly upgrade Main Street, conduct road network reairs, replace drainage, update signs, and refresh road markings.

Cumberland Council said it 'understands that these improvements may cause temporary inconvenience to road users, especially given the importance of the A5086' and asked the community to 'be respectful towards staff working on this project', reminding people of its zero-tolerance policy on threatening or abusive behaviour towards staff.

The spokesperson added: "The council is committed to minimising disruption and is working closely with local stakeholders, including parish councils and local members, to address concerns and facilitate a smooth transition.

"Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the road network and apologise for any inconvenience."
