A world-renowned west Cumbrian fair will be held in Egremont this weekend, with gurning, wheelbarrow races and horn-blowing all on offer throughout the popular event.

The Egremont Crab Fair & World Gurning Championships will return to the town this weekend with a whole host of family fun on offer throughout the week, culminating in the main events this Saturday, September 21.

Chair of the committee Callum Scott said: “We are excited, mostly because it’s an excellent forecast... we need the good weather to make it and it's forecast to be scorching on the Saturday.

“We are as organised as we can be, and we have had a lot of interest from all over with people wanting to come to the fair.”

The popular children’s TV channel CBeebies will be interviewing gurners ahead of the fair, and a Japanese film crew will be making a show on gurning.

The fair has been running for hundreds of years, with the first ever event taking place in 1267.

It is believed that the fair was founded when the Lord of Egremont started a tradition of giving away crab apples.

Callum said: “People look forward to the crab fair, it’s the biggest highlight in the town but it’s also a massive event for people further afield who come back year on year.

“Egremont fair was the place to be (for the fairground community). There are generations and generations of travelling fair ground people who have visited Egremont every year.

“It’s Egremont’s Crab Fair but it means a lot to lots of different people.”

The Crab Fair Queen has already been crowned, with the clay pigeon shooting and multi-terrain race events already taking place earlier this week.

Tonight, September 18 there will be a new duck race event for the fair, with the main events kicking off on Friday, September 20 and the traditional day including the gurning taking place on Saturday.
