A MUSEUM in West Cumbria has shared the history of one of Whitehaven's most iconic bygone buildings.
The Beacon, located on Whitehaven's Marina, has shared a brief history of the Grand Hotel.
The Grand Hotel stood on the outskirts of the town centre for decades.
It was one of the largest and most dramatic buildings Whitehaven has seen in its history spanning hundreds of years.
In a post on social media, The Beacon wrote: "It was built by the Earl of Lonsdale, 1846-47, which had 80 rooms, including one of the finest ballrooms in the north.
"The hotel was originally known as the Lonsdale Hotel, then subsequently called the Station Hotel. It had a covered walkway that connected it to the railway station.
"Tragically, this magnificent building met its untimely end when a fire destroyed it on 21 January 1940, erasing a cherished piece of history from the landscape."
