Haverigg Beach received media coverage after a being ranked the 'dirtiest' in the UK in a study conducted by Cartridge Save.

The beach in Millom received a water cleanliness score of 2.16. Nearby Seascale ranked eighth, with a water cleanliness score of 7.28.

Monthly samples taken since May by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs at Haverigg Beach show that the highest spikes of colonies of E. Coli bacteria and Intestinal Enterococci are greater than comparative months in previous recent years.

Between 2019 and 2023, research conducted by the Environment Agency has listed Haverigg as either sufficient or good in terms of water quality.
