AN ANNUAL cricket fundraising day was attended by scores of people despite poor weather forcing organisers to move the event indoors.

Whitehaven Cricket Club hosted the Ged Blaney and Arthur Lamb Memorial Day in its clubhouse on Sunday for the first time since 2017.

Ged Blaney, a former Whitehaven Rugby League player, died in 2015 after a two-year battle with bowel cancer. The event was created to raise funds for The Henderson Suite and Loweswater Suite at West Cumberland Hospital where Ged received treatment, as well as end-of-life care.

Arthur ‘Lambo’ Lamb was a key member of the committee who had helped to organise The Ged Blaney Memorial Day since 2015.

He died suddenly at his Distington home in January 2023 and last year the event was renamed to honour him as well.

This year’s event has raised about £7,200 – which organisers say they are ‘really proud’ of.

A statement from the Ged Blaney and Arthur Lamb Memorial Day committee said: “We are really proud of our efforts as an organising committee to get something out of what turned out to be a terrible bank holiday Sunday, weather-wise.

“We took the decision to postpone the cricket competition and instead, host the day indoors for the first time since around 2017.

“We received some very loyal support from our team entrants and general supporters who came down in their masses to get behind the event - which included running virtual horse racing, boozy bingo, live auction and of course our evening entertainment by Danny Dunnery Music, who were brilliant once again.

“We were also really lucky to have caterers, Fave Kravez, who braved the weather to pitch up their mobile unit and kept us well fed throughout the day with some delicious food that was very popular with the crowds.

“As always, we relied upon the efforts of countless volunteers and staff to make the day a success and we want to thank them for their contributions - the day wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Organisers are now looking ahead to next year’s event, which will be the 10th anniversary of the fundraising day.

They added: “Now we look forward to Sunday, August 24, 2025 - which will be the 10 year anniversary of the event, which has gone from what was a relatively small gathering on a bank holiday Sunday to what is now considered a shoo-in, in every body’s calendar and has a festival feel to it.”
