WHITEHAVEN Theatre of Youth’s latest offering is a modern classic from Disney - with magic, adventure and humour to thaw even the coldest heart.
Frozen Jr. is based on the 2018 Broadway and West End musical, and brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage.
The dazzling show at Whitehaven’s Solway Hall features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, plus five new songs written for the Broadway and West End production.
Isabel Simpson and Heidi Parker are adorable as young Anna and young Elsa, and Lauren Barnett and Tia Knight are also brilliant as middle Anna and middle Elsa.
Jasmine James brings Princess Anna’s energetic, outgoing and endearing personality to life, while Grace Savage gives a stunning performance as Queen Elsa, playing the Ice Queen's vulnerabilities with real conviction.
Both give strong vocal performances and Grace’s rendition of ‘Let it go’ is a highlight. All six girls capture the relationship between the sisters through childhood and adulthood, beautifully.
Bobby Donald is perfectly cast as the big-hearted, outgoing and cheeky snowman, Olaf, while Sam Dinwoodie gives a hilarious performance as the eccentric shopkeeper, Oaken.
Warren Neaves is brilliant as the lovable ice harvester, Kristoff and Josh Coombe does a great job with voicing and navigating the puppetry for Sven the reindeer. Tom Mellon gives real depth to the ambitious and scheming Prince Hans.
Koda Parr give a faultless performance as the pompous Duke of Weselton, while Charlie Donald and Devon Johnstone are delightful as the magical trolls, Pabbie and Bulda. Eve Barwise and Jonny Wood are also superb in their roles as overprotective parents, Queen Iduna and King Agnarr.
The young performers who make up the snow chorus, Oaken family and hidden folk, give it their all and it’s heart-warming to see how much they enjoy being on stage.
The magical elements of the story are captured so well with some impressive stage effects, particularly during Elsa’s transformation into a sparkling Ice Queen, ending the first half of the musical on a high.
Director Maria Morton and the whole production team have done a wonderful job, putting together a spellbinding show that will appeal to the whole family.
