ALDI will trial replacing packaging bananas with paper rather than plastic in selected stores across Cumbria from next month.

A paper band alternative will replace plastic bags on selected lines, including Aldi's Nature's Pick five-pack, mini bananas and the Organic six-pack.

Plastics boss at Aldi Luke Emery said: "At Aldi, we know how important reducing plastic is to our colleagues, customers and the future of the planet.

“We are constantly reviewing ways to do this, and this latest trial on our bananas is another great step in that journey.”

These are the stores that will be taking part:

  • Hollywood Retail Park - Barrow in Furness
  • Petteril Bank Road - Carlisle
  • Unit4 Beehive Business Park - Ulverston
  • Kingstown Road - Carlisle
  • Appleby Road - Kendal
  • Preston Street - Whitehaven
  • Cavendish Way - Penrith
  • Derwent Drive - Workington
  • Low Road - Cockermouth
  • 148 Risedale Road - Barrow-in-Furness
  • Dalston Road - Carlisle

If rolled out nationally, the change would help to remove an estimated 234 tonnes of plastic packaging per year, Aldi claims.
