Ulverston International Music Festival is returning to the area from May 31 for 10 days of back-to-back concerts in and around the town as it celebrates its 20th anniversary with a strapline ‘More than classical.’
The 2024 festival is designed to energise and inspire viewers as it aims to break down the perceived barriers between classical and more ‘popular’ music genres.
Events will take place across Ulverston and beyond, at various heritage sites across the Furness and Cartmel Peninsulas, taking in Levens Hall, Cartmel, Grange-over-Sands and Coniston.
Music fans will be able to enjoy a variety of acts and performances including the likes of BBC Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pike in a recital with festival president Martin Roscoe in the intimate setting of Ulverston Parish Church. Also featured is the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain who will bring their unique character, wit, and sense of fun to The Coro.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Sorcerer’ will be performed by popular artists, Charles Court Opera, telling the tale of Alexis, a man obsessed with the idea that all should fall in love.
This magical performance takes place at Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands on Sunday, June 2.
While, Tempo Gusto: Tone Trail at Brantwood Gardens offers something completely different with a guided walk around the beautiful grounds of poet and painter John Ruskin’s house and gardens set to the beautiful sounds of Nichols Korth, Alberto Mesirca, Animato Quartet and Anna Wolstenholme.
Younger music fans can also get involved with Tunes 4 Tots at Ulverston Parish Church on Saturday, June 8. Designed specifically for under fives, this is a fun introduction to some of the world’s best known classical hits.
Closing the festival on Sunday, June 9 at The Coro is Tea to Tango, an unusual twist on a traditional tea party featuring European and Argentinian musicians and Letitia Wilkinson and Andes Sosa dancing.
Ulverston International Music Festival is just one of the events being highlighted by the Let’s Go Culture project, which has received £175,908 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and is being supported by Westmorland & Furness Council.
