A WEST Cumbrian hotelier was taken by surprise when a 90s music icon arrived to stay for the night.

Happy Mondays star Bez booked into Moresby Hall following his show at the Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven on Saturday night.

Joanne Arthur, one of the owners of the hotel, was taken aback when The Gogglebox star turned up, after booking a room under his real name – Mark Berry.

She said: “It was really quite funny. He was a late arrival and so we lock up at a certain time. They have to ring to get in so I opened the door and saw who it was and was quite surprised! He came straight after the show.

“He was absolutely lovely. Really friendly. He was really interested in Moresby Hall because he lives in an old building as well. We were comparing the ups and downs of living in old, historic buildings.

“He loved all the quirky ornaments and accessories we have got. We got them locally from the Lakes Home Centre so he was asking for the website so he can go online and get some for himself.

“His wife was really lovely, as well. They were just really down-to-earth and friendly.”

The 59-year-old was a hit with locals at his event, Bez 'In Conversation': The Nine Lives of a Happy Monday.

Lynn Gilmour, who attended the show, said: “It was a brilliant night - interesting, informative, cozy. I suspect he would have talked for a couple more hours and the audience would have listened. A 10/10 for me.”

Gillian Agnew, who met Bez at the show, said: “It was really good. I have read his book. He has had an interesting life.

“It was good that the audience could ask questions and nothing was off-limits. It was really good to hear the stories. It was great to see so many people supporting the event too. He really is a nice man.”

Angela McEuan added: “It was a great night out with friends. The perfect venue. Bez was awesome - he had stories for days and could have listened to much more. He is so naturally funny and doesn't realise.”
