"Seven years ago I nervously embarked upon a journey into national politics, driven by three local issues; threats to maternity services at West Cumberland Hospital, the disgrace that was Whitehaven Academy and inertia on new nuclear for Copeland.
"The loss of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II and subsequent Coronation of our new King Charles III has shone the brightest of lights on the influential role of our British Monarchy. I was honoured to attend the international bio-diversity summit at Buckingham Palace and to chair discussions with global companies and financial institutions at King Charles’ request.
"As Defra’s Environment Minister, I led the publication of the Environmental Improvement Plan, paving the way for much of the nature-based progress in the UK and internationally.
"As seventy per cent of our land is agricultural, farmers will play a vital role in helping nature’s recovery whilst providing the nation with food and maintaining the highest standards. The transition to new funding standards is complex. That is why, in early 2024, I’ll repeat my supper nights of last year, inviting every farmer to join me to meet with knowledgable farm policy and funding specialists. Further details can be found on my website.
"Throughout 2024, my determined fight to bring Rolls-Royce and their Small Modular Reactor power station next to Sellafield will continue at pace.
"It has been a pleasure to see for myself the new build progress at West Cumberland Hospital where £130m Government money has been invested since 2010 and the £20m new build at Whitehaven Academy – there remains much to do, and I shall strive for every bit of progress possible during my final year as your MP. As ever, I look forward to working with many likeminded people to do so.
"May I wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful 2024."
