MILLOM has a new conservation area after councillors approved the move.
Members of Cumberland Council's executive committee voted in favour of the proposal at Tuesday's (October 31) at Allerdale House in Workington.
A report on the designation of a conservation area at Millom Castle and Holy Trinity Church in the town was introduced by councillor Bob Kelly (Millom, Labour) the portfolio holder for Cumberland policy and regulatory services.
He said: "Millom does have a very rich history."
He said it would also boost the local economy and that a consultation was taking place. He added: "It's important for the Millom area."
Councillor Elaine Lynch (Wigton, Labour), the portfolio holder lifelong learning and development, said: "As a retired history teacher I will support this. It's very important to maintain our history and heritage."
According to the council report the conservation area would be around Millom Castle, Holy Trinity Church and the old School Room and Headmaster’s House just north of Millom.
It states that designation of a new conservation area would be in accordance with the authority’s duties and adds that the council should “from time to time determine which parts of their area are areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance".
Members agreed with the recommendation to approve the designation of the new conservation area.
