AS the Crab Fair concludes for another year, the 2023 fair saw World records broken, greasy poles climbed and much more.
Crab Fair is one of England's oldest fairs with a history dating back to 1267. The name 'Crab Fair' comes from the original tradition of handing out crab apples to the townspeople.
This year's events included the greasy pole whereby competitors such as James Cuthbert climbed up the pole on Egremont Main Street. James stormed up the pole making it all the way to the ribbons at the top in around 33 seconds and was gifted a leg of lamb.
At the gurning contest, editor-in-chief at the Guinness Book of World Records, Craig Glenday, attended to recognise the fair as the world’s longest running World Gurning Championships.
A certificate was also presented to gurning legend Tommy Mattinson for the most wins of the World Gurning Championships for a man.
