Police officers in Copeland have issued a warning to drivers as children return to school this week.
They warn parents dropping their children off that it is an offence to not stop a vehicle's engine when it is stationary.
A spokesperson said: "Prior to schools returning this week we would like to remind drivers it is an offence under regulation 98 of Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Regulations 1998 to not stop the engine when a vehicle is stationary (except owing to the necessities of traffic - such as waiting at traffic lights or in a traffic jam) and a £50 fine can be given.
"Not only is this an offence, but it puts unnecessary emissions into the air around children and is unpleasant for residents whose houses you may be parked outside."
