A COMMUNITY gardening group is raising its prestigious Green Flag Award for the second year running.
Beck Bottom Community Gardening Group based at Hensingham in Whitehaven has achieved the accreditation which is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.
Lynne Todhunter, of beck Bottom Community Gardening Group, said the award was testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for the green space so that everyone can enjoy it.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Beck Bottom Community Gardening Group in achieving a Green Flag Award.
“Beck Bottom Community Gardening Group is a vital green space for the community, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles.
“The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
Beck Bottom Community Garden Group, is run by a small number of volunteers who share a passion for gardening and take great pride in the upkeep of the area.
Members meet up every Saturday morning at 10am to carry out gardening duties and general upkeep of the area.
The group started four years ago following a litter pick when volunteers collected around 21 bags of rubbish. They decided to create a small flower bed, hoping this would encourage the community to come and enjoy the area.
From those early days, Beck Bottom has flourished into an area of beauty, with three flowerbeds, wildflower areas, 21 trees planted and two lawn areas.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
