PLANS for a further 107 homes at a major housing development have been given the go-ahead.
The scheme put forward by Story Homes will see the houses built on land to the west of Valley View Road in Whitehaven, next to the Edgehill Park development currently under construction.
At a meeting held on Wednesday, members of Cumberland Council’s planning panel voted to approve the application, subject to a Section 106 planning obligation.
Conditions include providing 10 affordable homes, making an education contribution of £199,122 and a financial contribution of £8,000 to cover the Traffic Regulation Order to extend the 30mph speed limit on High Road.
Speaking at the meeting, Adam McNally, senior land and planning manager at Story Homes, said: “This application will be a continuation of our existing development at Edgehill Park in South Whitehaven.
“The application site is an allocated housing site. It’s in the new Local Plan to be allocated for housing development.”
Mr McNally said concerns had been raised over surface water run-off during a site visit and at public exhibitions by local residents.
He told the meeting: “This is something we are keen to prevent. There is a new drain to channel water away.
“In terms of the overall layout, it’s an attractive layout.
“There will be a significant economic impact. This will help the regeneration of South Whitehaven.
“This application has been carefully thought out. We have responded to all concerns. There have been no objections from statutory consultees.”
Councillor Tony Markley, who represents the Solway Coast, said it was “the prefect place to be building houses”.
The proposed development includes five two-bed, 39 three-bed, and 63 four-plus-bedroom properties.
The development will be accessed via two new access roads connecting to the existing highway serving phase three of the approved Edgehill Park residential development.
