FOR this week's edition of nostalgia, we have looked back at what Whitehaven's high street used to look like throughout the decades.
The changing face of Whitehaven is shown in these pictures. However, there are many building that are still the same. The photo of Catherine Street shows that the same buildings are still present, whether renovated or not.
Whitehaven still has many classic buildings if you look above the shops, many of the photos show that the buildings above remain the same, with a different business occupying the space below perhaps.
You can see St Nicholas' church on the Queen Street photograph, you can also see what cars looked like in that era in several of these pictures, what would now be considered vintage! The Irish Street photo from 1970 also shows what our old buses once looked like.
Whilst the buildings still look very similar, there are many different businesses evident in the photos which no longer exist.
These include the department of employment and productivity in the Catherine Street photo, the Burlington shop no longer exists in the first photo.
However, the clock on Lowther Street still remains and you can see what Dixon's, which is still standing on our High Street used to look like behind the Pancake Day photo.
Whilst Whitehaven is a rapidly changing town with many businesses exiting the high street in 2022 and 2023. It still holds a vast amount of history as we can see from the pictures.
