WHITEHAVEN Academy Year 7 girls' under-12s footbal team have won the County cup for the first time... so do we have some future Lionesses on our hands?
All schools within Cumbria from north to south are involved in the cup, with it being knockout rounds from the start.
The girls made it through all the rounds to the finals day at Harraby Playing fields against Q.E.G.S Penrith, Carlisle Trinity and Queen Katherine and ultimately winning the cup going unbeaten.
Proud parent, James Telford said: "The girls are absolutely delighted, to have only been at the Academy six months and to have already carved themselves into the history books has left them feeling a real sense of pride and achievement."
"All the girls are really good friends outside of school which has made it even more special to share such a memory with not only your team mates and school friends but hopefully friends for life."
They are the first girls team to win the cup bringing a sense of real pride to the team and school, in the same period the England lionesses achievements, they feel it has brought the much needed attention to girls gootball at grassroots level.
The team said: "There really doesn't feel a better time to have won the cup."
The team includes; Erin Heaney (Captain), Ava Lawson, Camelia McNally, Indie Hewitt, Bethan Agnew, Jasmine O'Hagan, Maya Robinson, Amaya Henderson, Lexi Stafford, Baylie Delaney.
James, Erin's Step Dad said:"I couldn't be any prouder of both Erin and her team."
"To watch her lift the cup as captain of her school team is a core memory we can share for a long time to come. Myself and other parents supported the girls' whole journey by attending every game in the county cup, home and away.
"To witness the reception they received on returning to school with cup was really touching, being clapped off the bus by the headteacher who had stayed back after hours to do so."
"I have to give huge credit to their teachers, both Mrs Lewis and Miss McCall, I've known Mrs Lewis since she started at Whitehaven School while I was a student there and to see how emotional she was at the final whistle added that extra sense of happiness to us all.
"I genuinely believe this is one of many achievements to come for the Whitehaven Academy both extra curricular and from an academic point of view."
