A drink-driver who hit a speed of 95mph while being followed by police didn’t realise she was over the limit.

Police witnessed a Vauxhall Adam exceeding the speed limit along the A595 at Parton on December 17, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said the vehicle, which was being driven by 27-year-old Megan Smith, hit a speed of 95mph on the Distington bypass and “drifted from side to side” on the road.

Smith was pulled over on John Street in Workington. She confirmed she had consumed alcohol prior to driving. She said she had drunk a glass and a half of wine.

She was breathalysed and gave a reading of 50mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Smith, of Victoria Place, Workington, pleaded guilty to driving with alcohol level above the limit.

The defendant, who was unrepresented in court, said: “I didn’t think I would be over the limit. I wouldn’t have got in my car if I thought I had been. I feel really awful about it.”

Smith, who works at Sellafield, said she was not at risk of losing her job but would have to find another way of getting to work.

Passing sentence, presiding magistrate Karen Quinn, told Smith: “You clearly were not in control of that car.”

The defendant was banned from driving for 16 months, to be reduced by 16 weeks, if she completes the drink-driver’s rehabilitation course.

She was fined £392 and must pay £85 costs and a £157 victim surcharge.
