A postmaster in Ravenglass has been presented with the Post Office 30 Years’ Long Service Award. 

From outside his Post Office and newsagents in Main Street, Ravenglass, Brian can see the Cumbrian village that he serves - and the sea.

He was born in Kenya, but he needed to come to England for medical treatment. He then decided to stay. Brian had seen amazing photos of the Lake District and he decided that this was where he wanted to settle.

The opportunity came up to take on the Post Office and newsagents in Ravenglass and he leapt at the chance.

Postmaster Brian Levitan said: “This is such a beautiful area that I have no regrets about moving here 30 years ago. It is such a peaceful and pleasant place to live and work.

"I used to go for long walks, but there are so many wonderful views without hiking.

“During the pandemic I stayed fully open. The people in the village needed me to be here and they were appreciative that the Post Office and shop were open.

"There are no nearby banks, so people need to come here to withdraw cash and to do their banking on behalf of all the high street banks. I was also busy with people sending parcels to people that they could not meet.”

Ravenglass is the Lake District’s only coastal village. It also enjoys a unique status in Europe as the only village that falls within two Word Heritage sites.

It lies on the western edge of the Lake District and it is part of the Frontier of the Roman Empire site encompassing Hadrian’s Wall.

Post Office area manager, Chris Ball, said: “Brian’s Post Office and shop are at the heart of the village and it provides so many essential services to this picturesque, rural, community.

"I want to thank Brian for loyally serving the residents, businesses and tourists in Ravenglass for three decades.”
