A POPULAR Lake District trail will remain partially closed as teams 'fully assess damage' and work on reparing the route.

The Keswick to Threlkald trail was closed last week as bad weather caused a tree to fall and block the route.

After inspections over the weekend teams have found that parts of the bridge has been damaged and part of the bank over the trail has become 'potentially unstable'.

The public are asked to avoid the trail from the junction near Wescoe (Brundholme Bottoms) through to Threlkeld.

A spokesman for the Lake District National Park Authority said: "Specialist teams have been working on the fallen trees on the Keswick to Threlkeld trail over the weekend.

"The current situation is that work continues to be difficult, but good progress is now being made clearing the trees from the cutting.

"The bridge handrails and deck have been damaged and the bank over the trail where the trees have come from is potentially unstable.

"As soon as the site is clear and safe we will be looking to repair the bridge and will get the bank assessed as soon as we are able to do so.

"Unfortunately, this means the trail from the junction near Wescoe (Brundholme Bottoms) through to Threlkeld will remain closed the rest of this week at least whilst we fully assess damage and undertake repairs.

"We ask that people avoid this area and take notice of safety barriers and information signs."
