A man began shouting and swearing at police when he was told his cannabis was being seized.

Officers were asked to attend a property on Trumpet Terrace in Cleator over concerns for a male from family members, Workington Magistrates’ Court was told.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said officers attended the address and checked the house. A bong and cannabis were located in the kitchen, which belonged to Jamie Greig, 35.

He was advised it would be seized and then began shouting and swearing at officers, the court was told.

Officers continued to do a further search. Greig was arrested and continued to argue. He eventually walked out with police.

Two strips of tablets were found in his trousers pocket when he was searched by the officer.

The defendant was interviewed and admitted the offences. He said the cannabis and diazepam was for his own use.

Greig, who was unrepresented, said: “I don’t agree on giving police grief. There was just the arresting officer - I was giving him a bit of grief.

“I found how he was talking to me out of order. I was only speaking to him how he was speaking to me.

“I asked for the body camera but I just get passed from pillar to post.

“I smoke a bit of pot at night to get to sleep and self-medicate on Diazepam sometimes. I don’t really talk to people. I just keep things in.”

Greig, of Trumpet Terrace, Cleator, pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing a Class C drug.

Passing sentence, lead magistrate Mary Brough, said: “There are other ways to deal with anxiety that are within the law.”

Greig was fined £276 and must pay £85 costs and a £110 victim surcharge. An order was made for forfeiture and destruction of the drugs and paraphernalia.
