Cumbrian star Dean Henderson remains in the England squad for tonight's clash with Germany - after admitting he's playing catch-up on the international scene.

Henderson is included as one of three goalkeepers in the matchday squad for tonight's Nations League game against Germany.

The Manchester United keeper, who is on loan with Nottingham Forest, was an unused sub for Friday night's 1-0 defeat in Italy.

Nick Pope got the nod in Milan, with Aaron Ramsdale and Henderson the other keepers in the squad.

Whitehaven star Henderson, 25, returned to the squad for the Nations League double-header after an absence of more than a year from the England scene.

The former Carlisle United academy player admits he has some catching up to do after a 2021/22 season out of the front line at his parent club.

"I think I'm behind at the minute," said Henderson, when asked about his chances of being involved at the World Cup in Qatar.

"[That is through] last season not playing so much, and the other lads have done unbelievably well.

"I knew my best chance was coming out [on loan], playing football, being in Gareth Southgate's eye and hopefully leaving a good impression."

Henderson was speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the international double-header.

Southgate has left Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrod Bowen, Fikayo Tomori and James Ward-Prowse out of the matchday squad for tonight's game at Wembley.

Henderson returned to the squad after an injury to the national side's No1 Jordan Pickford.

The Cumbrian has spoken of his dream of being involved in a successful England side.

Asked about his biggest ambitions in the game, he said: "To win the Champions League, but i also want to win the Euros or a World Cup with England.

"They're my dreams - what I've wanted to achieve since I was a young boy."

Southgate, who is coming under increased pressure after England's poor run of form, has John Stones back from suspension tonight with Jordan Henderson also available after injury. Jack Grealish is suspended, but Brentford's Ivan Toney is included in the 23-man squad.

In the Under-21s, meanwhile, Cumbrian keeper James Trafford will be hoping for an outing on Tuesday night.

The Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers loan player, from Greysouthen, was an unused sub in last Thursday's 2-0 win over Italy, as Stoke City's Josef Bursik got the nod in goal.
