THE usually busy streets of Whitehaven fell silent as people watched the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Shops in Whitehaven closed as the funeral took place, some opening at 5pm, as a mark of respect for the Queen.

The Whittington Cat opened in Whitehaven to show the funeral from 10am and owner Amber Sullivan said: "A pub is the social hub of a community, a place to come together and mourn together."

The Lowther Street pub was showing the funeral across all TVs and a big screen. The staff and customers observed a two-minute silence at 11:55am and all service stopped at 11:50 to ensure staff were in a position to sit with each other and join in the silence.

Food service was also halted to allow staff to join in with those who came to the pub to watch the funeral.

Amber baked some cakes for customers to enjoy for free. There were also tissues available on the bar if needed.

The staff wore T-shirts dedicated to the Queen which they designed to watch the funeral. 

The staff honoured the Queen saying: "Thank you for your service ma'am"

King Street was also respectfully quiet.

The harbour, which is usually filled with walkers, was silent. Some of the boats around the Harbour displayed flags and pictures of the Queen.

St Nicholas' Church had a flag lowered to half mast at the front of the gardens.

Many shops had posters, pictures or flags in the front of them. Dixons had a display in the front of their windows honouring the Queen.
