WEST Cumbria’s rugby fans are being urged to get down to Derwent Park on Sunday for what might be the last league derby until 2024.
Workington Town will host nearest rivals Whitehaven at Derwent Park this Sunday in a game which the club has said is ‘crucial’ for the short-term future of the club.
Director Graeme Peers said: “It is vitally important to the short term future of the club that the fanbase and the wider RL community of West Cumbria turn out and support what is potentially the last league derby until at least 2024 – and even then there is no guarantee we’ll be in the same divisions in 2024.
“We are away when defending the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy in 2023 so we urge Rugby League supporters to attend in numbers.
“Regular fans, please encourage a mate to attend and take advantage of the early-bird savings and also beat the queues as there will be limited cash gates available on Sunday.”
Both sides are keen to win the derby, with Town saying that are looking to end what has been a very tough year “on a high”.
Mr Peers said: “We look forward to welcoming Jonty Gorley and his team and hopefully many hundreds of Whitehaven fans too, who I’m sure are confident of ending their own campaign on a high by avenging that loss on the hooter at the start of the year.
“The derby is always a fantastic occasion and we are up for it and determined to end a very difficult season on a high.
“A good crowd on Sunday would make a massive difference and hopefully cheer us on to victory and take the last bragging rights at least from 2022!.”
Early bird tickets are available online and from the club shop with kick-off at 2pm.
