A COMMUNITY leader fears someone could have been killed after a tree fell into a town centre road - and is now calling for action.
Police closed Church Street in Whitehaven last Saturday night when a tree next to the former Brackenthwaite care home fell down, blocking the road County councillor Graham Roberts is calling for a site meeting to check if the other trees are safe.
He said: “It’s very dangerous. Imagine a bus full of people, or somebody with children coming round that way and a tree coming down.
“Fortunately it didn’t happen. It could have been absolutely catastrophic. We can’t have dangerous trees in the town.
“We can’t have that happening again. Buses were diverted. It was chaos in the town.”
Cllr Roberts said an audit of the trees would need to take place and he had called a site meeting to determine if more trees needed to be taken down.
