PLANS are in the works for a 5G mast near the Sellafield nuclear decommissioning site.
Cornerstone intends to build a 30-metre lattice mast on the greenfield site complete with antennas and dishes.
The firm aims to offer “best in class” communications infrastructure in the UK’s towns, cities and countryside.
Cornerstone say that their 20,000 telecom sites mean that businesses “can extend their products to a broader audience.”
They also believe that faster internet speeds bring economic development and “a faster and more cost effective” delivery for service providers like GPs.

If plans are approved, the applicant intends to build the mast on land to the North East of Sellafield and near Calder Farm.
They said: “The intention is for the proposed base station site to provide new and up to date network services, including 5G, to those living, working and travelling in the local area.”
The development which includes the upgrade of an existing base station, will have three antennas attached to the mast as well as four 600mm dishes and three cabinets, with ancillary works around the site.
Cornerstone has submitted an early indication of their plans to Copeland Borough Council to determine if planning approval is needed.
In supporting statements, the applicant said: “Cornerstone aim to engage and work with the planning department at the earliest opportunity from when instructed to deliver new infrastructure within your Local Authority area and often conduct strategic pre-rollout engagement meetings to discuss our wider rollout.
They said: “If your Local Authority would like a meeting to discuss wider Cornerstone rollout plans, then please advise.
“We recognise the importance of developing long term partnerships and will always work with you to deliver improved mobile connectivity.”
Cornerstone has consulted with Gosforth and Seascale ward councillors on their proposal who will inform residents of the area.
