- VOTING is underway for thousands of Copeland residents in a landmark Local Elections which will form a new unitary authority - Cumberland Council.
- From 7am this morning Cumbrians have been casting their votes at polling stations across Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland in an historic election.
- Today’s vote will mark the beginning of the end of the familiar Cumbria County Council and Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland district councils which will officially be abolished on April 1 2023.
- Seven Councils will go into two as Cumberland will form a separate council to Westmorland & Furness made up of Eden, South Lakeland and Barrow-in-Furness.
- Counting of postal and ballot box votes begins at 10pm when voting ends and declarations of winning political candidates who will become councillors is expected from early Friday morning (May 6)
- Whitehaven News and News & Star is providing Live coverage of today’s momentous Local Election and overnight. We will be giving interviews, breaking news and updates until all 46 ward council results are declared and we know the political make-up of Cumberland Council.
