A group of Royal British Legion members slept beneath the stars to raise money for homeless veterans.

Six members from the Seascale and Sellafield Royal British Legion branch decided to brave the elements for one night.

It was part of The Great Tommy Sleepout, a nationwide sponsored event for sister charity, Royal British Legion Industries.

The challenge was to rough sleep for one night during March to raise awareness and funds to help veterans who find themselves homeless and having to sleep rough.

Although the weather could not have been kinder to the brave six they still found it a challenge sleeping with no tents to sleep under and only the stars above them.

Nationally the campaign has raised more than £325,000 and the intrepid six managed to raise £1,089.

One team member said: "This was a lot harder challenge than I thought it was going to be.

"I can't imagine what it must be like knowing that it's going to be the same the next night, not knowing when it is going to end.

"At least I knew I was safe and wasn't going to be assaulted in my sleep. I can't imagine how hard it is for the veterans."

Jason Rushworth, chairman of the branch, also joined the team. He said: "Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us and sponsored us.

"We have been overwhelmed by the interest it has created. It's not just about raising money but also raising awareness of the plight of these veterans.

"They sacrificed so much and now they find themselves with no home and no roof over their heads."

The money raised will go to the Royal British Legion Industries, which is a leading military charity providing employment, welfare and housing support to veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants; as well as people with a disability or health condition, and those who have been long-term unemployed.
