THE RECENT heatwave had the Whitehaven News team looking forward to locking our typewriters away for the evening and heading out for a drink or two.
For that reason, we were searching for the “best beer gardens” in the area. As always, our readers answered the call.
Here, in no particular order, are some of many recommendations for the best beer gardens in the Copeland area.

1. Harbour Master – The late-night coffee house and bar is situated right by the harbour, offering marina views and a relaxed atmosphere to give guests the chance to unwind.
2. The Yellow Earl – As well as the drinks menu, the Lowther Street pub has a list of delicious food available, from pizzas and burgers to wraps and tapas dishes.
3. Castle Knights – The dog-friendly pub by Flatt Walks has a large beer garden located at the back of the premises to enjoy on a roasting hot day.
4. Bower House Inn – One for the walkers, the Eskdale pub also has a drying room for people to leave their boots as they enjoy a well-deserved seat.
5. Sun Inn – Found on Hensingham’s Main Street, the pub’s grassy area is definitely more enjoyable with a bottle (or two) of wine. The local favourite is also dog and family friendly.
6. The Shipwrights – If Whitehaven RLFC have an away fixture one weekend, make your way to Bransty Row where there will be live sports shown all day.
7. The Punch Bowl Inn – On Millom’s The Green, the pub has a visiting pizza van every Thursday to accompany your ice-cold pint.
8. The Globe Inn – The Hensingham pub have plenty of chairs on offer for customers to enjoy the rays with a beverage.
9. The Manor - Within a minutes' walk from St Bees train station, this relaxed pub with rooms is also close to the start of Wainright’s Coast to Coast path.
10. Hensingham RLFC – One reader feels that there is nothing better than getting to the club on a Sunday and enjoying a pint whilst watch the U16 team take part in a Northwest Counties match.
