A war memorial in west Cumbria has been listed as a Grade II structure by Historic England.
The Hensingham war memorial was one of five World War One memorials to be newly recognised by the organisation this week in the region, coinciding with Remembrance Day and services across the county to pay respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Copeland MP Trudy Harrison welcomed the recognition for the area’s landmark and shared background on the memorial’s importance.
Mrs Harrison said: “On Armistice Day, I am pleased to share the news that Hensingham war memorial has been listed at Grade II.
“The memorial has been listed by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, on the advice of Historic England, as one of five First World War memorials to be newly-listed today in the north west.
“The memorial was built on land donated by the Lowther family as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by local people and was unveiled on September 27, 1925, by the Cumberland Artillery’s Colonel D. J. Mason DSO.”
