Pupils at a school in West Cumbria had their eyes opened to the fascinating local history on their doorstep on a school trip to a church in their area that has a vibrant past.

Year seven pupils at St Bees School spent the day at St Bees Priory Church, learning all about its past - including the mystery of the St Bees Man - with local expert Chris Robson.

The discovery of the St Bees man - a nearly perfectly preserved body of what is believed to be a medieval knight - in 1981 captivated residents at the time.

The discovery was made by archaeologists from Leicester University during a dig organised by St Bees residents and historians John and Mary Todd.

The team were searching for evidence of a pre-Norman church at the priory, which was founded in 1120, when they came across a large stone vault that contained the skeleton of a woman and a large lead coffin - revealing the well-preserved St Bees Man wrapped in a shroud.
