A ST BEES parish councillor has urged Cumbrian County Council to consider plans for a new cycle track which will benefit the local community.
And it seems that readers agree with Coun Eric Taylor who said: “The current pathway is so dangerous for such a popular area.
"The track is essential for the safety of visitors to the area and will also encourage people to get out more.”
Plan for a pathway which would link St bees with Mirehouse is a concept initially designed in 2000 and relaunched 15 years later in a local exhibition.
Plans had to be put on hold as proposals for a large residential area as well as a West Cumbria Mining (WCM) coal loading facility were also in place.
Although discussions with WCM continue to this day, the parish council is still hopeful that a resolution for the area will arrive before the end of the year.
Public support for the pathway, branded the 'Valley Link', remains strong in the area as it ever was.
Coun. Taylor said: “We had a pop-up stand which had gathered over 200 signatures in four hours.”
It is also believed that the new track would make the walk to the town’s beach a lot safer for residents and visitors alike.
Coun. Taylor also hoped that Cumbria County Council could offer some much-needed assistance for the project.
He said: “We’re just a small parish council and we’d like to see a bit more work from the council. They need to realise how worthwhile it will be for the area.”
The popularity of the idea was confirmed by our readers who were definitely in favour of a safe cycling and walking track:
Ryan Taylor said: "My Dad (Eric Taylor) and the St Bees Parish Council would appreciate any support with this fabulous new proposed cycleway."
Chris Hayes: "This could be great for the people of Whitehaven and of St Bees. A safe route to St Bees has been needed for many years and it will be a great for tourism."
Eddy Stewart: "Cycle tracks are brilliant, good luck St Bees and Whitehaven."
Rebekah Gall: "Great idea!"
Stephen Houseman tried to drum up support by asking: "Will you be supporting this Mike Hawkins?"
Mike Hawkins: "Stephen Houseman. yeah definitely. I've been talking to Eric Taylor from the parish council for a few weeks now ...he knows they have my full support."
