It’s that time of the year when many families and friends will be out in the glorious Lake District fells.

There are an incredible amount of walks to choose from and sometimes it can be quite daunting where to start.

These are just a few you may consider next time you’re out and about in this beautiful part of the world.

1 FAIRFIELD HORSE SHOE

A stunning walk that sees thousands of visitors ever year. With a long and a short route to pick from, it can offer any keen walker a day’s worth of adventure or just a pleasant walk in the afternoon.

2 GRIZEDALE

The picturesque forest that stretches over a 24.47 km² area of woodland is situated in the heart of the Lake District and is made up of a several hills, small tarns, and the settlements of Grizedale and Satterthwaite. A perfect spot for a day out with the family, especially during summer.

Lucy Richardson said: “Grizedale Forest is my family’s favourite.”

3 HELVELLYN

The mountain which is a must for any walker in the Lake District. Its highest point is a north–south line of mountains to the north of Ambleside, between the lakes of Thirlmere and Ullswater.

James Francis said: “Helvellyn. Toughest but the best.”

Marlon Berrick said: “It’s not for the faint hearted but it’s very rewarding.

"Definitely worth it for experienced hikers.”

4 WANSFELL

Another iconic fell walking route just east of Ambleside which should be on any walker’s list of places to visit.

The route is part of the long southern ridge of Caudale Moor and occupies the swathe of territory between Ambleside and the Troutbeck valley.

Nathan Phelps said: “Wansfell is a classic one.”

5 ORREST HEAD

A steep but rewarding walk which can provide you with the best view of Windermere, and the perfect place to watch the sunset in the evenings.

John Turnman said: “Orrest Head. Such an amazing view at the end of a tough climb. Worth it.”

Jane Stephenson added: “You have to experience this one for yourself no matter where in Cumbria you live.”

6 CONISTON OLD MAN

The popular fell walking route in the Furness Fells, this stands at 2,632.61 feet high, and lies to the west of the village of Coniston and the lake, Coniston Water.

James Barton said: “Coniston Old Man. First time I went there it become my favourite.”

7 GUMMER'S HOW

This scenic hill walk boasts some of the best views in the area. Gummer’s How will bring out the best out in any walker and reward them with some incredible sights on the top.

Callum Maylott said: “Gummer’s How. Going there this weekend.

“The views are to die for and I love taking visitors up there and showing.

"This should be on anyone’s list.”
