A SCHOOL reunion for some of the brightest girls in and around 1950s Millom is being organised.
Pupils who attended Millom Commercial School between 1949 and 1959 can re-live the best days of their lives under the watchful eye of their former teacher, Fred Thomas, who will be guest of honour.
The reunion is on Friday, March 7, at Kirksanton’s Bankfield House Hotel, from 6.30pm.
Event organiser, Norma Hughes, nee Wilson, who now lives near Gosforth, said: “There has never been a reunion for the girls who attended so I thought it would be a good idea to arrange one.
“I met Fred a few years ago and we agreed it would be something we would all enjoy doing.
“Many of the girls have not met him since they left the school.”
Mr Thomas, who is said to be looking forward to meeting his former pupils, became the school teacher in January 1949 when eight pupils joined. Over the years the intake grew to about 12 pupils annually.
Millom Technical School catered for girls aged 13 to 15 in the post-war era and enrolled pupils who had passed an entrance exam.
As a branch of Millom Grammar School, it trained girls in all aspects of clerical and secretarial work as part of a two-year course.
The catchment area for the school stretched from Millom to Seascale.
Mr Thomas, 85, and living at Broughton, said: “I’m looking forward to meeting the girls and it has been many years since I last saw some of them.
“I’m from Liverpool but ended up in Millom by mistake because after the war I was told of a job for an art teacher.
“When I got here it turned out to be for commercial arts so, having a background in accounting, I gave it a go.”
The event can accommodate around 80 people so those interested should book as soon as possible.
And if there is any space left organisers say they will invite boys from Millom Technical School to join them for a walk down memory lane.
A ticket price is yet to be decided.
