A GROUP of youngsters has enjoyed an introduction to the world of crown green bowling.

Around 15 players, aged between five and 11, attended Whitehaven Bowling Club on Thursday last week to try their hand at the sport, with further sessions being held this week.

Local sports coach Vic Stewart, who helped to arrange the sessions, says introducing young blood is vital to the long-term future of the bowling club.

“Creating a strong junior section is important as the club’s membership is perhaps a little older,” said Vic.

“We’ve been running sports sessions all summer long for the kids that attend the Chill-Out Zone, held at St Gregory & St Patrick’s School but open to children from all schools.

“We’ve done football, rugby, cricket – and bowling is a good alternative to those who want to try a different sport.

“The club has had some good youngsters come through in recent years, including Liam Connor who started when he was 11 or 12 and recently became the county’s under-18s singles champion.

“And of the group we’ve had this summer, three or four have showed real promise and it’s hoped they’ll become full members.”
