JORDAN Johnstone’s dream became a stunning reality when he walked onto the Stade Gilbert Brutus pitch.

For, this moment in Perpignan, was the culmination of 14 years’ hard work and dedication by one of Cumbria’s most promising rugby league starlets.

A product of the successful Kells junior teams, Johnstone, a former St Benedict’s School pupil, made his Super League for Widnes against Catalans Dragons.

His proud parents Craig and Lorraine watched from home, with Kells packed with former team-mates cheering on the 18-year-old half-back.

Johnstone took to social media after the 21-8 defeat, and said: “My childhood dream has become a reality.

“I cannot put into words what it felt like. I want to thank everyone for their kind messages - I really appreciate it. Hopefully there are many more good times to come.”

Johnstone’s love affair with rugby league started when he joined Kells aged four. He has gone on to represent Cumbria Storm, and Whitehaven, before last weekend’s heroics in France.

Signing for Widnes last summer, his meteoric rise has been hailed by mam Lorraine, who said: “Jordan has given everything to rugby league. It’s all he’s ever wanted to do.

“We are all so immensely proud of what he has achieved. The comments from everyone have been overwhelming.

“Kells was packed out as all his former team-mates and friends got together to see him.”

Johnstone was called up to Widnes’ first team after a number of high-profile injuries ravaged the Vikings squad.
