Whitehaven's Coach Road will be closed for four days from January 23 for £100,000-worth of work.
Cumbria County Council will be carrying out carriageway reconstruction work, weather permitting.
The work is being carried out to replace a section of worn carriageway surface between the A5094 Back Corkickle and the B5345 at Ginns.
Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for highways, said: “The council is investing £100,000 in this essential maintenance work on a key route within the town.
"We have engaged with local residents and businesses to keep them fully informed of the works and what measures we have put in place to accommodate access requirements, but unfortunately we have no other option but to close the road to carry out the necessary carriageway resurfacing.
"We will be working hard with our contractor to get the job done as soon as possible but there will inevitably be some disruption and we would advise drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.”
A signed diversion route will be in operation throughout and traffic marshals will be on site during working hours to advise and assist with any access requirements.
Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained throughout.
Anyone with enquiries about the work should call the Cumbria Highways Hotline on 0300 3032992.
